What a service includes
- Filters cleaned or replaced
- Indoor and outdoor coils cleaned
- Refrigerant charge checked and leak tested
- Condensate drain cleared
- Electrical connections checked and tightened
- Controls and thermostat tested
- Performance checked in both cooling and heating modes
- Written report
How often
Domestic systems: once a year. Commercial systems, particularly anything over the F-Gas threshold, should be done twice a year, and leak checks there are a legal requirement rather than a recommendation.
Why it is not optional
Two reasons beyond the obvious.
Your warranty almost certainly requires it. Manufacturers void cover on systems that have not been serviced annually, and they will ask for the records.
And a system running with dirty coils and low refrigerant is drawing more power to do less work. The service usually pays for itself before the year is out.
We service systems we did not install
Most of our servicing work is on units fitted by someone else. Some of those installers are no longer trading. If you have a system and no idea when it was last looked at, that is normal, and it is fine.
