Rooms we are asked about most

    Bedrooms

Sleeping through a heatwave on the south coast is the single most common reason people ring us. A wall unit set to 23 degrees on night mode will hold the room steady without the noise or draught of a fan.

    Loft conversions

Loft rooms take heat straight through the roof and are often unusable by mid afternoon in July. Insulation slows that down but does not remove it. Cooling does.

    Home offices

A small room with a person, a couple of monitors and a south-facing window is a surprising heat load. If you work from home, this is the room that pays for itself in usable hours.

    Conservatories and garden rooms

Glass gains heat fast and loses it just as fast, so these spaces are typically unusable at both ends of the year. A single unit running in both modes turns them into rooms you use in January as well as July.

    Noise, honestly

Noise is the objection that stops most people, and it is based on units fitted twenty years ago. Indoor units now run from around 19 decibels on the lowest fan speed. The part worth planning is the outdoor unit: we position it away from bedroom windows, off party boundaries where possible, and on anti-vibration mounts so nothing transmits through the wall.

    Running cost and heating mode

A domestic system is a heat pump. In heating mode it moves heat rather than generating it, which is why it delivers roughly three to four units of heat for every unit of electricity. That makes it cheaper to run than electric radiators, oil-filled heaters or storage heating.

    • Cooling a bedroom overnight typically costs pennies per hour once the room is down to temperature
    • Heating a single room is usually cheaper than firing a whole gas system for one cold morning
    • Inverter compressors modulate rather than cycling on and off, which is where the efficiency comes from

    Common questions

A modern indoor unit on low fan speed sits around 19 to 25 decibels, which is quieter than a fridge. The outdoor unit is the one to think about, so we site it away from bedroom windows and off shared boundaries where we can.

Far less than most people expect. In cooling mode a bedroom unit typically draws a few hundred watts once it has pulled the room down. In heating mode it is a heat pump, so it delivers three to four units of heat per unit of electricity.

Usually not. Domestic installs generally fall under permitted development, with conditions on unit size and siting. Listed buildings and conservation areas are the exception, and we check that at survey.

Yes, and it is one of the most common jobs we do. Loft rooms overheat because the heat gain is through the roof, and a correctly sized wall unit deals with it easily.
